    Luna_Astara A rainbow looking for a rainbow

    Hello there!

First, thanks for stopping by to read my rant/crazy mess!

Okay, so, over the past year my partner and I have come into possession of over 50+ different antiques ranging from glass, silver, porcelain, and pottery. Some of these things were left in our home for over a year by an ex-roommate, so we are unable to ask what they are. Others we obtained by moving into an ex-hoarders house that my grandmother bought and we are cleaning out. There are several things that are from AVON that go back to the 70s-80s. There are things that came from Occupied Japan from we don't know when. Basically, we are struggling to figure out what we have and what to do with any of it. The town that we live in doesn't really have any resources for antiques except for furniture, much less appraisal, so trying to do anything with any of it is proving to be difficult.
Any help that anyone can provide would be much appreciated. We have photos and can provide more if necessary, there's just WAY too many to attach.
Thank you so much in advance!

Your "Occupied Japan" items are from the years just after WWII when Japan was occupied by US forces 1945 - 1952.

Post your photos in the appropriate "category" Forum and provide measurements and anything else you know (materials, damage, marks for instance.)
The limit on photo weight is 1MB. If you have trouble posting them, just ask!

Many items can probably be checked in 'sold' on eBay.

It's been a really long time since I've had to use forums and what not... How do I go about finding the correct category for these things?

We've been searching for months on a lot of these things, just to come up empty handed

Top of the page select "Forums" then scroll through the categories and try to pick one that is closest to what you're looking for. Silver, Tools, Furniture etc. It helps to get the attention of someone who might know if it's in a category they know something about.

if I am not sure, I will put the item in the search bar on the upper right. Like "perfume bottle". Then look at the forum that people used to post.

Look under the heading, Antique Forums here:
    https://www.antiquers.com/forums/#antique-forums.7

See if you can identify the category for an item, i.e. "Furniture"

If an item doesn't fit in one of the specific categories, then put it in the Antique Discussion forum. That's like the catch-all for items that don't fit anywhere else.

I will just go out on a limb here without seeing any photos to say MOST Avon is not worth listing or selling. There may be some pieces that will bring a decent price, but overall, they are not really popular.

    Much good luck.

If you are asking about an item here tell people what you are asking about in the title. "What's this?", isn't much help to anyone. Say if it's furniture or metalware, a painting or a fork, wood or ceramic, or whatever... a little detail to get people started. Photos should show the whole object and relevant details, including any maker's marks.

That means pictures of the back and the bottom; half the times that's where the critical info is, even if a piece isn't marked.

I will say however that most Avon "collectibles" aren't. That's true of most things sold to be collected, truth be told; some are better than others. Occupied Japan pieces have gone off the boil too; 30 years ago they were hotly collected, but not so much now.

Luna, sometimes things that are no longer "hot" collectibles can be sold in lots. Just food for thought.

Some of the Avon perfume bottles are still collectible so check individual pieces first before you include them in a lot as Debora suggested.

@Luna_Astara welcome to the forum. It does sound like you are overwhelmed. Pick something, take some good photos from all angles and start a new thread for each item.
You are likely to get an error message to say your photos are too large. If so email them to yourself as medium size, save them and then try again.
There are lots of very knowledgeable people on here so hopefully you will get good information on your items.
    Good luck!
