My husband and I just found this bakers cabinet this weekend. I would like to learn more about it. Someone told me it was a Possum Belly Bakers Cabinet. I can not find any markings on it anywhere. I also can not find any information about them online. None of the pictures I have found looks like ours. It does not resemble the Hoosier cabinets. I would like to know period time, should I get it restored and How do I get the musty smell out of it. I would like to use it in my kitchen but want to make sure I get it cleaned properly as to not damage it. My picture is too big to post and I don't know how to shrink it down

Hi and WELCOME @Jersey12!! If you're on a cell phone, there are many free apps to download to resize your images.....on your computer, there may already be a program there, but again, you should be able to find a reasonable or free for there too. Images MUST be under 1 MB to post.....here's a brief tutorial to help you along...if you need more help, just ask there are others as well who can provide it!!! Good luck and anxious to see your Bakers Cabinet!!!!

Hi @Jersey12 again! I LOVE your Cabinet!!!!!! In looking at Pinterest, you can see the several styles of Possum Belly cabinets.....all are very nice looking....most of the differences seem to be in the top cabinets.....some are painted, but most seem to be a natural finish. Did you strip or sand it down or did you buy it that way??? Looks like much of the work is done!! Others and @verybrad should be along to help with finish and the musty smell... sounds like at the very minimum it needs a very good airing out....wait....there will be more input!!!! And if you're going to be using it functionally, you'd only want to use a food-safe oil if staining...........

Can you tell me a time line on age or where I can find that out? How do I clean it? The musty smell is awful!

I'd air it out, clean it up and Minwax it. :)

Thank you for your help. We bought it how it sits. I am afraid to do much to it as I don't want to damage it. We would like to use it in our kitchen but I am concerned with lead paint as we have an infant. Hoping to find the best and safest way to restore and clean it.

Put it outside with everything open.
    In the sun if possible.
And natural ozone will do much.
    Dryer sheets may help.

It might only be milk paint.

Ozone machine and possibly by rental.
Some such as Servicemaster and Servpro have rooms to ozone fire losses.

I bet there is a place you can send a paint chip to for analysis.
