My mother in law recently gave this to us. I've never seen one like it and am interested to know vintage and, possibly, origin. Does anyone recognize it? It has a skeleton key for the latch, but I need to repair the mechanism. Thanks.

Thank you all for the suggestions and entertainment. Here is a photo of the interior and the back side. I see no makers marks, anywhere.

Absolutely typical of a between the wars British wardrobe. Delightfully, the door is very similar to front doors of the period, here. I think it's a mahogany veneer, that would also be typical. The back looks like deal. Anything on the lock?

And it is, of course, a gentleman's wardrobe.

I had one, as a teenager. Pa had a built in wardrobe fitted and I inherited his solid wood one. Very heavy and solidly made: I kept it for a few years after I married. I suspect it then went for scrap, sadly. His had drawers, too.

I didn't notice any markings, but will check again. The lock worked when my mother in law bought the wardrobe 25 years ago, but no longer does. If I can get the lock off, I should be able to repair it.

Have a look on the plate as well and on the rail cups. might be clues. If you can look underneath, even better.

No luck with markings underneath. I've been all over this thing...no luck on identifying marks. With today being decent weather, I hauled it outside to wipe the outside down with Howard's Restor-A-Finish then a coat of Feed-n-Wax. I had my wife wipe out the inside with a mild hot water and dish soap solution, before I wiped it with Old English Scratch Remover.
