I was wondering if anyone could help me identify this carved gilt wood Jesus plaque? Possible age? Thanks for any info.

Another vote for molded.:sorry: Can you see how the 'grain' on the cross goes in different directions, even though it is a single piece? And there is the white hanging hole, and blobs etc.

You can see some casting artifacts that made their way into the mold on the face and thorns [unless it's the surface treatment]. Doesn't really look like wood, though. Look inside the hole with a light and mag glass.

I begin by telling you that I am not an expert on ANYTHING!! However, I’ve made enough mistakes thinking resin was wood that I learned to look for ONE thing first...scratches! Scratches are generally the first thing a hoodlum does to fake “wood.” But I don’t care how old it is, wood will not be scratched in similar sized cross-hatch patterns (either like differently-sized tic-tac-toe marks and/or long, repeated diamond patterns that look like a tiny grater was used to artificially “age” an item). On another note, it’s a lovely piece and as soon as I figure out a definitive test (besides a drill or a match) for resin, I will let you know.

look at all the woodgrain on the cross that don't show up anywhere else on the face.........
Yer gonna have to bust it in two for me to consider it's real wood...:meh:

Looks like bubbles on the face and in the deeper disc sander lines.

Could it be syroco wood? Made of wood pulp and fillers...

Doesn't look like gilt either. Brass leaf possibly.
