I can't ID what this particular "S" button was worn on or for, but do known "Superior Quality" buttons were on uniforms of both sides in the Civil War. Many of them were of 1 letter only such as "A" for artillary, "C" for cavalry, "I" for infantry, etc. I can't find one with only a "S."

Several companies used "Superior Quality" as a tradename. Some had it written as Superior Quality, Superior (star) Quality (star), Superior (dot) Quality(dot), etc. Also some had a dotted outer ring and dotted inner ring on the back like yours and others have a dotted out ring and a solid inner ring.

Here is Superior Quality button with the same back as yours and a very similar face except has "SP" rather than just "S." This was used by the Southern Pacific RR.

Could be a rare blazer button worn only by mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent. Did you by any chance find it in an old telephone booth? That's where the only two other known specimens have turned up.

    Yeah I'm lyin' again!
