HELP DECIPHER ARTIST SIGNATURE ON 1935 PAINTING?

I went to a local thrift store this morning. I don't usually go on Saturdays because they don't put anything new out; just try to get rid of what didn't sell during the week by marking almost everything 1/2 price - I've already seen everything when I go during the week + it's every man (and woman) for himself - people will stampede over you trying to get a 1/2 price item!
But I didn't go yesterday so I thought I'd check to see if there were any vintage bikes. Instead, I found a hand signed, 1 of only 10, Francisco Rodon poster of Alicia Alonzo (I found one on worthpoint that said there were only 10 signed & they cost $200 at the time!), a Richard Volpe print + a geometric abstract painting signed stein.
And - this painting! Except that I can't read the artist's name? (the date is 1935, right?)
    Can anyone make it out?
    Thank you!

Looks to be by someone who just liked to paint in their free time

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The date looks like either 1931 or 1937 to me. The last digit looks a lot like the first one. And we have another sig that's very hard to read! I couldn't make sense of it.

Doesn't help with the signature, but will comment that framer's label on the back dates to time before zip codes, so possible it is original to the painting.

The better I can see it, the less I understand it. Last letters look like o[o?]ker.

I see 1937 more than 1931, but I can also see it as 1957.

This probably isn't much help, but I don't think that first blip is part of the sig. temp01.jpg

How come? It is ambiguous & makes it more difficult to make sense of what follows, but strokes are very strong & do not appear to be part of the composition. I have played a but with the notion that it could be a stylized A. It's that squiggle after the ere that gives me the pip.

Edit:Without the first character, I could see Perez.
Pentimento: No I can't. It would have to be Peres.

The paint is much thicker than rest of sig (and paint is that thick elsewhere) and I think it's a different color than the sig.

All guesses of course, so not willing to commit to this. :hilarious: temp01.jpg

Not guesses, speculation. It's often the way we arrive at correct conclusions, by tossing ideas out until one sparks. It's definitely easier to come up with pronounceable combinations of letters without it.

It is, of course, completely possible there is no record of this painter on the Internet.

We're such a bunch of obsessives.

I see Beregi, Oszkar. There’s an Oszkar Beregi actor (Hungarian) but I don’t find a painter by that name.

If Beregi, Oszkar is Hungarian for "Sunday painter", I think you hit the nail on the head!
