Hi Nikos. Do you happen to know if the Colossus of Rhodes really existed or not? If it did is anything left of it? I've often wondered and have heard various stories, not sure what to believe.

hello again! thnak you for the warm welcome! :)

nice to see other geocachers here too! :)

dear springfld.arsenal, yes! colossus existed! it was builted... and not made like all the other statues... it was not in the entrance of the mandraki port, as most of the people know... but most probably it was when the Grand master's palace (palace of the knights of Rhodes..) is now!
when it fell down because of the earthquacke in 226 BC, it destroyed 30 houses... and.. when Rhodians wanted to rebuilt the statue... they went to the oracle of Delphoi but they said... leave the things that are fallen.. on the ground! so... by all that.. we know that it was not in the mandraki harbor.... but in the city... and since you could see it from a distance... it was in a high place..
mandraki harbour was the base of the ancient rhodian navy, a restricted area for all non rhodian and if you were there... the punishment was death! now.. we know that they could see the broken parts of it.... and if it was in the entrace of the harbor... and the oracle said to leave the parts as is... who really would leave all the navy power of Rhodes inside without being able to leave the port... for 700 years??

we do not know exactly how it looked like but we have some clue.. in handle stamps on amphoreas, etc...and most probably.. the statue of Liberty was inspired from colossus... that is why you can see the rays on the head... like the god Hellios!!!

the parts were here in rhodes until 653AD when arabs who captured for a while the island sold the parts to a jewish merchant... the parts were melted and weapons etc were made from the metal...

the whole thing with the engraving of colossus on the netrance of Mandraki was a fantastic engraving of a belgish (I think) visitor of Rhodes in the 19th century... with the name Rotiers.. or something like that... but it was so nice and romantic as an idea that... ;-)
