Very textured. I think not very old. Some crackling and chipping so probably it has to be varnished for better preservation. What looks like a signature is on the underside of the stretcher.
Amateurish work or not? Any suggestions on the location?
    Thanks

K - looks Italianish to me.

And it is saying, "If you bite me, I will crunch!"

(OK - only one cup of coffee so far. LOL!)

Decorative or factory painting I should think. I think your condition problems are somewhat due to improper ground preparation and subsequent exposure to moisture.

Italianish sounds like a good suggestion. Or possibly from the nearby countries.
Factory you say. Could be. It must have been restretched at some point because I doubt that that the siggy was originally there.
Seems like the canvas is not of the best quality either.
