can anyone shed any light on this table I inherited from my Grandma? It's 640mm high x 510mm x 510mm. It's also been painted a long time ago and I intend to restore it. Untitled-2.png Untitled-2.png Untitled-2.png Untitled-2.png

    thanks, Gary

Hello, Gary. Where did your grandmother live? This table looks Indian or another SE Asian place.

Well, I suppose it could have come home with a colonial household.

I thought Anglo Indian as well.Thats going to be a bear to refinish, but it will be stunning once you do.

I agree with Anglo Indian. If you google "Anglo Indian carved table" you will see that some of these can be quite valuable. You may want to do further research, and/or speak with an antique furniture specialist, before trying to refinish it.

I don't doubt it has some value although I can't help thinking it would be better off being restored to its former glory. Maybe I'll look for someone local for an appraisal like you suggest, thanks.

In your photos, I can't see the paint you describe. I am not familiar with the techniques used in making this furniture, but one thing to consider is the possibility that the coating is original to the piece. If so, removing it might be a mistake.

somebody already started removing the paint years ago on the top....

I got in touch with a local company who did a quick appraisal from the photos. It's Burmese circa. 1880 and quite an unusual model apparently. I'll be taking it to see the appraiser sometime for a proper look. For now at least it's worth around £500.
