Hello everyone! Found my first forum for antiques I can attach to! The community seems so supportive funny and useful! Background on me is that my father about five years ago started to buy increasing amounts of art, movie posters and antiques. I loved the stuff he bought and we would be going to auctions every week, it was brilliant. I’d study everything I liked and learn and buy books on my favourite subjects. After amassing a rather large collection my dad chose to quit his job and after a long period of unsurity he took the plunge. Starting off any business is hard and his is no different. He’s now a full time movie poster and collectables dealer. My passion from antiques comes entirely out of my father and going to these weekly auctions together. I like to think I’m some sort of jack of all trades at auction, I’ll buy anything, research anything. I hope I rarely miss quality, but who doesn’t think they’ve got the perfect eye. My name is Nathan, I’m 20 and I generally at the moment like bottles, porcelain, art and oddities but I’ll buy anything I fancy. I’m a student who instead of spending my outrageous loans on booze and drink spends it on antiques. I’m like a Paul-Durand Ruel but without the noble cause, just antiques for me . I live away from home now for university and I lurk around the local auctions finding my fancies. I’ll be asking all sorts of questions here on all sorts of junk haha. Hope I fit in and can help some people one day. Thanks for reading
Hello and welcome. Although it feels like you've been around for a long time. Thanks for the background story, nice to know. You must miss going to auctions with your father, and he must miss it too. Haven't seen any junk from you so far, just good buys. Nice of you to call the forum a harbor in the storm.
Hi, Thank goodness the "disease" called collecting has not dried up and died. I am so glad to see young people still hunting and gathering. Nathan I started to do this stuff when I was 9 yrs old and only stopped 6 years. I am now 82 and still get a thrill at finding something that I never knew I wanted! greg
Welcome, Nathan! I was just reading the other thread you posted after this. It appears that you have a good eye! I see you've been a member of this forum for several months and have recently started a few discussion threads. We look forward to more posts from you.
I really do miss going with my dad @Any Jewelry but then again not going together for a while makes it exciting and new again when we do Haha xD Greg, “something I never knew I wanted” is exactly how it feels every time I see antiques. I don’t see too many people my age at the auctions. I have friends who like my stuff but don’t collect.
Thanks, I love hearing backstories. Yeh Johnny, definately wacky. The first more expensive item for me I bought was a Hyena Pelt, a Kudu Pelt, Springbock pelt and some springbock horns. Paid £170 in full and sold the Hyena Pelt for £250 on its own. Felt amazing, everyone thought I was nuts buying a hyena skin
Hi and WELCOME, Nathan!!!!! It's SO nice to see someone young getting "bitten" by the antiques 'bug'!!!!! AND you'll have a lifetime of collecting, learning and exploring!!!! What you're showing is all very nice too!!!! Happy to have you in the "Harbor"!!
Greetings from across the pond ! Use us wisely....like before you buy...not after. It's very seldom that a younger collector has this much access , to this much knowledge....and is humble enough to know it ! Welcome to the community !!!
Welcome to the funny farm, Nathan! (any claims I ever had to sanity were sold to feed my junk habit years ago - they were false claims anyway)
Harbor in the Storm Nathan, I know where you post from is landlocked, but Harbor in the UK and in English is spelt Harbour
