At first glance I thought that the handles were dragons, then foo dogs but the long tail really adds confusion. Looks like it has been laying in water for years. very heavy for brass.

I'm getting a faux Mayan vibe, with jaguars. Might have been kept outdoors, as a garden ornament, maybe.

Since no one with certain information has replied, I'll take a stab …..

You might look at archaic bronze Chinese vases for similar. Suppose could be Japanese as well. It is a very old style, though I think yours much newer. This should get you in the right ballpark. Pinning it down to an exact era will probably take further research.

Jaguars I think you are right that explains the long tail. i just scraped the upper portion of the vase and it have a silver or tin color. 20180711_191454.jpg 20180711_191514.jpg 20180711_191555.jpg 20180711_191602.jpg

okay verybrad I am in the right country and have found similar looking items. So when you say mine is much newer than the ones of this period does it mean that this is a fake. 1 the decorations does not come all the way down to the base 2 the animal are more closely attached 3 when I scratch the surface underneath is a silvery looking metal 4 the repair the the base is one with a thin bronze or copper material Does this mean just that this item was made with a different material perhaps in Japan or was it made to decieve.

If it is a shiny silver/tin, then it is probably a pewter base with an antique bronze finish. Pewter would not acquire that finish naturally so the bronze-like patina would have been added to deceive. But a lot of asian goods celebrate earlier work. Next time don't scratch in such an obvious place - do it on the bottom or inside if you must do it.

I don't see the quality I would expect to find on an authentic piece. Not necessarily made to deceive but, rather, a newer cheaper version of what is a culturally significant antique.
