Hi! I've searched and searched and I just can't find this mark anywhere. Does anyone recognize it?

The dish is about 5" diameter.

    Thank you for any help!

This seems to be a toughy. I looked through Lehner's at all the eagle marks listed in the index, and also through the "H" section. If it's American, it's not in her book, or I couldn't find it. Nothing came up on the internet, either.

That's one regal eagle. What's he standing on? Arrows? His aerie? A rocky outcrop?

Pretty flowers. I would guess some kind of dianthus. Sweet William, carnation.

Hi, thanks for looking in your book and on the internet. I tried Kovel's and the internet, too, and found nothing close. I'm not sure what the eagle is standing on. It just looks like it's supposed to be the ground when I look at it with a magnifier.

I see this type of painted flower and I always think it's a cornflower. BWDIK?

    Thanks again!

The only H&H that comes to mind is, Horn and Hardart! But I cannot imagine that bit of china as part of their offerings.

I haven't had any luck either. The closest I could find to any mark that even look like this was that of Hukin & Heath, a Birmingham **silver** firm, in operation from 1850s to 1950s. They did make a few silver items with porcelain inserts in conjunction with such companies as Coalport. Sometimes the porcelain parts had both companies marks. In no way do I think your dish is one of these pieces because
    1. Yours seems to have only one companies mark.
    2. Yours doesn't appear to have been an insert into something silver or to have had a silver frame.
    3. Don't think???? yours is old enough.

Anyways, have included a pic of Hukin & Heath's mark showing the H & H with eagle followed with the Coalport mark so you can see the similarity. The item is a porcelain cup set on WorthPoint.

Willl the pic won't post. It shows up nicely in the reply window. I bet WorthPoint has some sort of coding in their image files that doesn't allow reposting of images. Anyway if you go to the website, the mark on the porcelain cup is one of the thumbnails.

BTW, Silver, I also came up with Horn and Hardart stuff and such a multitude of times. Even though I agree this doesn't seem possibly to be one of their things, I still checked out their markings with not finding this eagle and very very very few times they used H & H.

Good morning! Yes, I think I did see an H&H mark on a silver piece with a Coalport porcelain object when I was searching on the internet, too. I didn't think I had a match there. I will check out Horn and Hardart, just to see what you mean. I really do appreciate your help. Must have been a very small company this came from with not a lot surviving.

    Thanks again!

LOL, looking up Horn and Hardart in Google images, I came up with nothing but wonderful Art Deco Automat cafeteria photos! That was fun. I see I'm going to have to dig deeper.

Maybe what you found was the restaurant china that was made for the automat cafeterias? I can't find any other pottery or porcelain with that name.

Trust me! H&H did NOT have such a thing. Thick, heavy "restaurant ware" was what transported their goodies. (And they really were goodies -- they were famous for several things, but the best was their chicken pot pie!)

I loved Horn and Hardart, it was like magic to me as kid.

It looks like the mark of a decorating studio. Do you think there was another mark to the right of it that was removed? Maybe the maker of the blank?

You know, I was wondering about that area in the center. The glaze is either sanded off or that spot was never glazed. If it was sanded down, it is very lightly, and I don't think it would have been sanded enough to remove an underglaze mark. It feels more like an unglazed area. So, it's a good question, but I don't know! LOL. You could be on to something, though, that the H&H may be a decorating studio instead. I will try that angle!

    Thanks!

    Hi,
God I miss the Automat. Their coconut pie was the best. I remember the homeless eating in there for free. They would take a cup of hot water and throw in five or six ketchup containers to make tomato soup to eat with crackers. What memories you have started.

Having lived in both Philadelphia and NYC, I have been to all of them. And I remember the "tomato soup" people! When I was very little, I used to lurk near the empty boxes to see if I could catch the hand that made the replacement. LOL!

My grandmother used to take me there once in a while. She was a big fan of the creamed spinach...and the coffee.

I don't remember having those here on the West Coast when I was a child. I do remember the lunch counters at Kresge, Newberry's, and, of course, Woolworth's. I LOVED the grilled cheese. LOL

I only saw the automat experience, I believe in movies and television.

Oh, I remember having lunch at Horn & Hardart in mid-town Manhattan with my mother. I think the wall with all the little doors was brass?

Haven't thought about that in years... thanks for the memory!

The other one was on 42nd Street, East side. Third Avenue - ish? Depends upon where you were shopping.

I don't think it was 42nd, but one of the North/South streets. For some odd reason I actually remember that.
