There is no way to tell from the outside of the case. It can not be from 1805 though because stem wind watches did not come into being until approx 80 yrs later. Also I believe that is likely a nickle silver case, probably an 18 size.

 

If you are considering purchasing this you will want to try to get a picture of the movement inside the back lid also. Much can be told from that picture.

 

Another thing to take into consideration as you gather info on this watch is that the maker of the case and the maker of the movement really have nothing to do with each other. Before 1910 or so movements and cases were actually sold separately and one chose a case at the time of purchase. After that time watches began to sell already already cased but still the maker of the movement ordered their cases from another company generally and the cases bear a different serial number and usually a different makers name then the watch movement.

Edit-unless of course you are talking about much older watches constructed one at a time completely by hand.

 

It is possible that this was a service watch with a works serial number on the back, a railroad watch would be a great find, but it might just as likely have been the foreman's watch at the broom factory for all we can tell.

 

As far as American railroad watches go after standards were introduced a hunter case was not permissible.

 

The stamped number on the front is odd though. I wonder if it might have even been a "loaner" watch used by watchmakers when a customers watch was being repaired?

 

That is a novel idea but seems as feasible as anything.
