    Greetings folks.

I stumbled through an old box that my Grandfather had, and found this whistle. 100% works and is VERY loud. I did a bit of independent research and this whistle could be made of bakelite?

Does anyone have any clue on when this could have been made? I know this whistle is at least as old as I am, three decades, and my father before me had the whistle. My father was born in 1936 and passed away in 2013. My Grandfather was the one that originally owned this whistle. I do know my Grandfather was German, but beyond that I have no idea.

    Okay on with the pictures!
    -Cheers!

Could be horn. It does appear to say Made in Germany which means it was probably exported from Germany and bought in the US or elsewhere.

It does appear to predate the second world war.

Not an expert, but I think this is called a pea whistle. Often used by police.
AF is probably correct in that the material is horn. Definitely is Not Bakelite.
    Time period - 1920s-30s
Again, I'm not an expert just going on what I observed over the years.

Does nobody proofread their stuff? :)

I agree, I'd say about £10 to £15 might sell.

Nice whistle. Probably made of some manner of natural material. Exactly what, I'll leave up to other people.

Not a police whistle, but probably one purchased for everyday use.

If you Google WWII German whistle, several images come up of this shape whistle. Some are calling them German NCO whistle, German Police whistle, German field bakelite whistle, etc. Some say the material is bakelite. I'm not saying yours is bakelite, but only what some may be.

I don't know if the following online Whistle webstites would have any help on this whistle or not:

    http://thewhistlegallery.com/

Here it is described as a signal whistle including a chart of "German infantry pre-arranged signal blasts as tactical signals in the field." I suspect this type of German whistle made in bakelite was used from c1910 to WWII.

BTW, I think this shape whistle is referred to as a round pea whistle rather than an escargot shape pea whistle.

I would call it a field whistle or something. I dunno. A police or military whistle would have markings on it of some kind if it was officially issued/manufactured for military/police use.

An escargot whistle is just an ordinary whistle. They're called escargot because they look like a snail, if you flip them upside down.

    Oh, and nice whistle, alright!

Edit - My ol' man says... field whistle, horn, and agrees with the date consensus.

A pea whistle refers to the little round pea sized ball inserted into a type of whistle that when blown creates a reverberation within the chamber causing the sound to be modified as the pea bounces around ........it's annoying....my football coach used one .
