Weird layout in that link. Mostly ads. Can not find the story so I guess it was in the tv screen which on my computer is black and blank. No a fan of foxnews anyway.

It's rather an interesting story, Oleg Cassini + Jacqueline Onassis. It was a commercial arrangement. The designer was a friend of Joe Kennedy's. Jacqueline preferred French designers, especially Givenchy, but knew that favoring foreign designers while First Lady would be poorly perceived. So she'd send Cassini references to Givenchy pieces and he'd remake them or adapt them under his own label. It is even believed by some that the label of a Givenchy dress might be replaced by a Cassini label. So a quid pro quo. Joe Kennedy got to promote a friend's business and Jacqueline, who had no private means, got free clothes which her father-in-law paid for.

I can see how quite a few of her clothes could be Givenchys, or copies thereof.

My theory is hoodwill gets such an enormous amount of stuff daily so its almost impossible to check every item.Hence "good" stuff slipping thru.

My understanding is that the organization skims off everything of value/quality before it gets to the thrift stores and sells it in bulk to for-profit thrifts and others. That explains why very little "good stuff" to be found on its sales floor.

Our local GWs rarely have anything spectacular. I actually do better by looking for CHANGE when I'm in there, lol.

I think it's a bit unethical. People donate to Goodwill to help their communities and all the better quality clothing and household items don't stay there.

All of the good stuff goes on line, and the poor/disadvantaged who THEY SAY IT'S THEIR MISSION TO HELP get left with damaged goods and dregs, bar some accidents. Resellers get locked out too. If it goes on line it goes for near retail, and bulk lots (when all you wanted are four items out of 20) are also overpriced. The true poor/disabled may not have a credit card to use to buy on line. Or secure computer access. So, locked out twice over.

Goodwill's mission is not to literally clothe the poor, nor to fit out their homes... Goodwill is about training and job-readiness so the disadvantaged can better try to provide for themselves.

    Their mission statement:
"Goodwill® works to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening communities, eliminating barriers to opportunity, and helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work."

To this end, Goodwill sells off the donations they receive in many ways, and for maximum worth, in order to use the money to pursue their mission.

    A very informative article:
    https://www.seattletimes.com/pacifi...odwill-really-does-with-the-stuff-you-donate/

I never find any treasures in my local Goodwill and admit that I have actually stopped going there. The good stuff they get goes to their online sales venues:
    www.goodwillfinds.com
    www.goodwillbooks.com
    www.shopgoodwill.com
I have made a couple of fine jewelry purchases via one of their online platforms and found the pricing much better than purchasing new from a local jewelry store.

It's probably been a few years since I entered one.Really thorough pickings hard work, finding 3-4 things in one day's a powerball to me. Don't have the energy to spend at GW.
PS-A few things undoubtedly slip thru in certain GW's somewhere, but with all the hunters these days-it's already tough enough.

I find good-for-me stuff there on the regular. The online version for our area is weirdly often filled with plain trash. Meanwhile, I found gold and an impressionist painting in-store recently. Yesterday I found 3 brand new leather designer bags that retail new in the 400-600 range, just hanging on the rack. They put the plastic MK bags in a pile in their show case though. :hilarious: I do live in an affluent area, while the online hub is in the burbs though. The skimming for online is only as good as the under-paid sorters I imagine. Sure they have lens, but...do they care enough? Having worked retail in my life I'm guessing the answer is rarely.

I do wish mine had jewelry though. I've been to others elsewhere that do. :grumpy:
