Pretty sure this one is glass, the clasp looks like gold but I don't believe it is. **another confusing Bou sentence.I meant it feels and looks like gold, but why would it be on a glass necklace**
The beads are knotted obvs and it's very very heavy

The top one with the glass beads, the yellow feels very plastic like but heavy...don't know why someone would go to the trouble of knotting the silk between these ( huge) glass beads

They look like egg yolk amber bakelite, so bakelite made to look like amber. Highly collectible. Here is a test for amber and amber lookalikes, please don't use a hot needle test:

Here is an egg yolk amber bakelite necklace with a rather ambitious price tag imo, but they are pricey:

Others know more about fashion jewellery and can date them, my guess would be 30s for the bakelite amber one. I won't ask you for the exact length, but would you say it is longer or shorter than average?
    It is lovely, btw.

The clasp of the second one certainly looks like gold or goldplated, possibly goldfilled. There doesn't seem to be any other metal showing through, even though the necklace has clearly been worn for some time.
When you open the spring clasp, do you see any wear, or is it all gold?

Thank you for your lovely reply ( which I read all of carefully ! This is the New Bou)

I'd say the first one is average length. Hold in, will measure her *gulp*... she's approx 26 inches in total length. I DO have some bakelite necklaces already, but for some reason didn't think of that in connection with this. Does make sense! Heavy clunky plastic xxx Thank you
The other one , the clasp looks and feels like gold, like rose gold. No wear anywhere. The glass beads are all different sizes and shapes! The clasp is also H U G E, bigger than average I think? A magnet doesn't stick xxx

    Pleasure, of course, Bou.
    I'm impressed!:playful:
Even more impressed.:D That helps in dating, the details of which I will leave to the 'fashion joolies'.

I think the gold clasp could be solid gold. And because the necklace is handknotted, and the beads seem to be handshaped, the beads must have some value as well. They look old. I just have no idea what they are, very heavy and glass, or like glass. Maybe someone else will.

    **Proud of self**

The New Bou reads every word TWICE now just to make sure :D

The clasp does feel like gold...think I can see bubbles in the beads though which would indicate glass I think? Maybe someone put it together out of bits that were hanging 'round? They are the weirdest shapes and sizes though x x
Many thanks for your help as always <3 xx

I strongly suspect that your yellow beads are ancient glass ones, restrung with a nice rose gold clasp in the early 20th or late 19th C.

Not all Roman glass was made by Romans, it just means Roman period. So maybe made by the Iceni, does that help?

The Iceni didn't make glass, the technique was brought here by the Romans. That's about the age I was thinking: I've seen similar and that was a wildly popular colour. There's also older Egyptian glass of that colour.
