    Maybe 4-4 1/2 in diameter.

    I've seen similar items in Chinatown in NY. They are just reverse painted balls. I don't think they were ever meant to be mounted on anything although they sometimes are sold with wooden stands. They needed the opening to do the reverse painting. Probably not very old but it does have value. If you google China reverse painted ball it will give you an idea of what they sell for.
