Featured Glass Bead earrings, age and where made

Charity shop find, beads are three quarters of an inch long, half inch wide. I thought they were pretty and for only £1.50 a bit of a bargain. They are glass, some of the strips are iridescent and look hand made to me. The brass isn’t in very good condition, can I stop the corrosion? Also any ideas about age or country origin please? Thanks for any info.

 

Egg cup of vinegar will sort that. Beads may well be Italian.

Just found these on eBay and they have been listed as 80s ceramic and glass. Not sure if the ceramic is the main bead and the top one the glass.
I really think mine are glass, but now it’s confusing.

Your beads look more like ceramic or artificial polymer. One of the clues is the straight edges at the ends of the applied stripes.

Glass would be worked in a hot state. Working over a flame, the artisan would have the base bead on a mandrel. The stripes would be added by heating a round, colored rod of glass until it melted enough to lay it onto the base bead. It would trail off at each end where the rod was touched on and pulled off. The bead would then be rolled on a flat surface, "marvered", to smooth it out.

On your beads you can see that it looks more like little strips of clay/polymer were rolled out like dough, cut into strips, and pressed onto the surface.

 

Thanks, think you have explained why I wasn’t finding anything similar when searching Venetian, Czech glass etc. Think 80s might be about right. I had no idea polymer clay could be so pretty
