I picked this up at the Goodwill yesterday and was pretty jazzed to get it for $4.99. I've had ormolu boxes that were vintage, but I've never found one from this era. I always wanted a thick beveled glass Victorian one.

However, there was a negative surprise about it. Not a repair. Can anyone guess?

Even found it's cousin online sold on Etsy:

If you have a guess, please post. Will reveal the answer Saturday.

I'll speed up the response since we got a correct answer so quick. There is a hint in my above description "I've never found one from this era..." Was surprised, yes this is BRAND NEW. I've never been duped by a new one before. When I pulled off the GW tag there was a "TWO'S COMPANY" tag.

SIS, good eye. Do you think the one in the Etsy listing is new as well, or that this was somehow a copy made from that form? Comparing the two side by side, construction looks identical, although the Etsy one is a larger (5 inch) box.

Learning experience here. This one is still pretty nice, the glass is beveled and thick and this small box weighs over 10oz. I think it is going back to the store, using their return policy, though. I was looking for an older one.

When I pulled off the GW tag, this other tag was under it!

I would have been fooled as well. Still a nice piece for holding jools.

It's not ormolu. True ormolu is gilded by a process whereby powdered gold is mixed with mercury, and the resulting paste is brushed onto the cast form. The whole is then fired at a temperature that causes the mercury to evaporate, leaving a gold deposit on the surface.

    I would assume it's brass :)

I'd have been wondering. The black fabric is in too good a shape, and the glass is green. Neither look right for old. OTOH for five bucks I might buy it anyway!

FYI, Two's Company makes these in different sizes.

    From AMAZON:

The largest retails for $95, the one I got for $66.

I do like that the feet on the new ones looks so sturdy:)

Usually on the old ones the feet are not solid and are rather flimsy and are frequently bent.

Based on the GW one I got, the feet are not rock solid on this new version. It is kind of a thinner metal like the old ones, you could bend a foot if you had to. They share a lot of attributes of the older ones. I think they must have gotten an older one and told some designer in India to "make one as close to this as you can."$66-$95 retail price reflects that some work went into these. Not totally inexpensive, and they have some heft with the thick beveled glass.

Mostly posting so others know these are out there! (And kinda wondering if that Etsy sale was one of these...) Two's Company makes a 4th (maybe 5th version) too, not shown in photo above.

Thanks all, and great job SIS spotting it right away. :)

Just to add my 2 cents here.
Most of the vintage ones seem to have a gold or burgundy color velvet or velveteen lining on the inside bottom.
I don't know if the vintage ones ever came with a black lining.

If they did I've never seen it. The ones from the 50s were supposed to resemble the ones from the 18th century or something, so they didn't use colors that didn't look faded even they were brand new. So no black.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The lid area on yours looks a bit different. Yours has a wide metal band below the lid itself, and a bigger clasp (or whatever the closure piece is called). Maybe a discontinued version? :)

I would've grabbed it, too! Too bad it's not really "old".
I have a bunch of these jewelry caskets, all from the 50s-60s. I would love to stumble upon a real Victorian-era piece.

This made me pull out a "project" piece that I doubt I'll ever get to. It's missing its lid, and the fabric is shredded but I'm going to put it in giveaway, probably this week, if anyone wants a little project.
