IMG_8371.JPG Anyone out there have access to Chinese pottery marks?

Other than thinking this is famille rose, I think the panels with the coins are really nice and the dog? handle, too. Beyond that, I just don't know... What is the name for the "piped," or raised design?

    Here's the place to look.

    http://www.gotheborg.com/

But I think you should be open to different orientations of that picture if you want to find a match.

I think it's just raised enamel but do rotate the mark a quarter clockwise.

I thought it looked weird - It's not in my hands :))) but thanks! I'll have a look around.

I don't think that the mark, whatever it reads, matters at all as this is a recent or vintage piece.

I don't disagree, K - the person I work for thinks (maybe) older and asked me to find out more, if I could. I haven't found the mark, in any case, and it's time to attend to my sore feet!

Any opinions on the workmanship or design are welcome.

    Thanks, guys

    I agree with kardinal.
    Not old.
To me a ginger jar has a different shape. I think this is just a covered jar.
    Rose Medallion or Famille Rose

I didn't suggest looking at gotheborg because I thought it was old (which I don't.) Sometimes he has examples of more recent markings with approximate dates used as a way of showing how those "honorific" usages show up on 20th century pieces.

I agree on just "a covered jar," Pat.

Sorry, Bakersgma, I'm not sure what you mean by honorific?

An homage within the mark, or in the actual style of decoration?

I was referring to the Chinese practice of using "old marks" on things that aren't as old as the mark might suggest.

The runny stamp itself doesn't look old, to me.

I personally know very little about Chinese, Japanese and Asian ceramics and art, so it's a thankless task to un-convince him of age, since he believes he does!

And I thought I might learn something, so there's that! :)

    Thanks

Well you can tell your friend this.

There is not enough detail in the background.

All the background boxes on older pieces have dots, lines or other designs.

Also the girls faces have a more modern appearance. The noses have a slight upturn.

It looks to me like the mark reads 仿大清乾隆年, "Reproduction of Great Qing Qianlong Era."

That is, this is one of those instances in which an "imperial" mark really does say something useful.

The useful part being the inclusion of the "word" for "reproduction" right?

It's not common yet not really rare to find repros marked 仿 fang somewhere.

It would have been nice if they have reproduced the drawing style and the enamels as well.

Thanks! This is wonderful! My recall of the piece - I saw it briefly - was that it wasn't old, but was having the most trouble locating examples to compare details.

Thanks to you all - your help is really appreciated! I'll use the translation to look at repro websites - first step, and all that.
