Some of you may have seen the home bar and storage bench I recently purchased:

Well yesterday I cleaned them, but there are some pretty large, bad stains on the top of the bench. They almost look like water stains:

I'll tell you what I tried:

    1. Cold water and dish soap with a sponge and a nylon brush (we don't have hot water at the store).

    2. Windex

    3. Soft Barkeepers Friend with a scritchy sponge and a soft nylon brush. I was very careful with this one, rinsed and wiped often.

The rest of the vinyl looks great - nice and bright and red. But there are at least 5 of these large stains. The bench could easily be recovered but I don't have any red vinyl and the colors I do have aren't bright enough.

Anything else I can try to get the stains out? I appreciate any suggestions.

Actually, I do have enough red faux snake skin vinyl but it has a matte finish - yuck.

That stain might have been there almost since it was made, and it looks like ink from here. I think you just leave it visible and let the buyer worry about it.

Johnny - I'll look into that.

    wiscbirddog - I haven't tried a magic eraser yet. I will tomorrow.

Just checked out the process Johnny - it actually looks pretty doable.

As a generality when a stain has permeated the top layer of the vinyl it cannot be removed. If for some reason the stain sits on the top a Magic Eraser may lessen it. I’ve used a Magic Eraser to get surface stains off patent leather which is basically platicized leather but not once it’s gotten into the skin.

Thanks reader. I think it has permeated it. I spent a lot of time on this and although all of the dirt and grime came off, I don't think any of the stains even faded.

I've used special vinyl paint for car upholstery and it worked well - on two bar stool seats that took some heavy use, and to stencil a dragonfly on the spare wheel cover of my SUV, it outlasted the vehicle...

Wow - I never would have thought that spray paint would work on vinyl upholstery.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

If you think it might be something like ink, try spraying aerosol hairspray and wipe it off......amazing how it does take ink out!!!

    Wonder what peroxide would do.

Think I would put some on a q-tip and work a small area, let it sit for a minute and wipe off with a very wet sponge. Not sure exactly why water reacts with the peroxide.

Aqui - I don't think its ink but you never know. I'll try it.

Cluttered - would peroxide whiten the red?

I have a vintage item with a printed vinyl lid, small stain, usually I can get a stain removed but with this one, no. I found one suggestion to use diluted ammonia, still no luck.

I don't know. Peroxide is not a bleach. I've never had any problem with regular fabric.
Peroxide takes blood out of clothes with no harm to the clothes.
    That's why I suggested a q-tip to try a very small section.
Does the vinyl fold under the lid with any piece you could test there.

Should add, peroxide will only work if it is an organic type of stain.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Have you had any luck with this stain, @Bookahtoo ? Just curious...

I haven't tried fig. I've decided to sell it as is - unusual for me. But it's up in the front of the store so I don't have to look at it all day. :D

Clean Naugahyde With Soap and Water

When Naugahyde was sold in the mid century, it was advertised as being very easy to clean. One of the original suggested cleaning methods was to mix a solution of liquid dish soap and water. Use a white dish cloth to clean the affected area, and then be sure to dry the area with another cloth. Leaving Naugahyde wet for a prolonged period of time is best avoided, if possible. If your dish cloth isn’t getting into the cracks, seams or around buttons, then use an old toothbrush in these hard-to-reach spots.
