Featured German salt glaze jug

    My latest acquisition. A German salt glaze jug. No mark on the base, just the numerals 659 (maybe) on the base. Reminds me of Westerwald but not as much quality.

    I would also say Westerwald.
    Westerwald is always good quality, but I think you are referring to the detail of the decoration. That depends on the market they manufactured for. Most Westerwald is good but modest utilitarian ware, and this one is much more decorated than most.

    So it would seem that Westerwald is a region and also refers in general to salt glaze stoneware made there. Its not a specific kiln. I guess it is pretty difficult to identify it exactly as a lot of these seem to be individual items. The last 'numeral' on the base after the 65 and 5 might be two initials combined perhaps. Maybe L and Y or G.

    Yes, it is a beautiful region where they make a lot of stoneware and other ceramics.
