Would removing the leather and putting new upholstery diminish the value or is the original leather worth keeping on it? Any advice would be great, I would guess late 1800 to early 1900s from Germany but correct me if I am wrong.

Think you're just about right on the date & appears very German - walnut. I have a chair similar (less ornate) and had the leather replaced and think it only improves the chair. If it was 17th century, most would leave original.

Thanks for the reply drew. I will more than likely be going to pick it up if it’s still there next week, fell in love with it after seeing.

$300 is a very optimistic price in my humble opinion. Of course depending on where you are would make a difference. I think you are spot on age wise. It could even be a tad later.

Dallas Fort Worth area. I realistically don’t see myself finding this chair at a great price in another shop near or definitely not eBay.

I'm not shocked it turned up in Texas; there were a ton of German settlers up in the "Hill Country" and no doubt some brought things with them. It could also have been a tourist souvenir.

Yeah is for a late victorian chair that needs work (new seat), still, if you plan on keeping it for personal use it doesn't really matter.
