    They are the inspecting unit.

    "Waffenamt Abnahme 320"
    all equipment were looked at by inspectors before going to the storage units when found that they were in accordance with the required specifications.
    mass-produced items like gas masks were of course not looked at individually and given a number that grouped the type of equipment. not even a staunch German would have inspected appr. 50 million gas masks...
