Gentleman's Dresser

I am refinishing the gentleman's dresser shown below. I have tried searching for more information on this kind of dresser but have been unable to find very much that is helpful.

What period are they from? How long were they popular? Was the hat box for top hats? Any feedback would be appreciated.

These date from the late 19th century, and were actually never quite properly "popular" as such but had their niche. Lots of marriages made from furniture of that period are as eclectic and eccentric as the real deal, so it is hard to tell if that is not really a bedside table parked on top of a chest of drawers. The feet make it awkward, but the warmth of the golden oak make up for it.

 

Believe it is as made. Cupboard just as likely for shaving implements, gloves, etc. as it is for hats.

 

Also known as a "hatbox" dresser. This one looks like oak, ca. 1910.
