Researching a recent find (Wilton trivet, featured in 1953 giftware catalog) and I was surprised to see an iron trivet that looks just like the one I purchased last summer in Maine. But mine has a gate mark. My understanding is that a gate mark that has not been filed down suggests 1865-1900 when machine grinding removed most casting marks. Is that almost always correct? I know Wilton was known for reproductions of earlier iron work.

Also, I have found many many examples of this “boot remover” listed as Victorian. I always assumed it was. But it has no gate mark. So does that mean it’s NOT Victorian? FA1D06F2-69F5-4123-B30C-B0841073195E.jpeg

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I didn't know what a gate mark is, so I've learned something. Unfortunately, I can't help with your question. I hope that somebody can!
