Featured Gallery framed Cadwallader Lincoln Washburn etching.

I,m not sure what excited me more. The Washburn etching or the Prestigious Vickery, Atkins & Torrey Gallery in San Francisco.
Actual artwork is 8" x 8". Title is shimmering light
Cadwallader Lincoln Washburn 1866-1965

 

Vickery, Atkins & Torrey Started in S F in 1888. Burned down after the 1906 earthquake. Rebuilt on Sutter Street around 1909 and then closed in 1933

I was just looking at that one. That one is different. During the storm. Mine is after with the sun coming out. I saw the original oil painting. Was called plowing with storm looming or something like that. I saw one other with the same thing reversed.

The engraving was probably 25-30 years old when it was framed almost 100 years ago.

 

They look to me to be different states of the same etching. He may have intended two different atmospheric effects, but the position of people and animals seems to be the same.

Agree. Only the weather changing. Same etching, same date? Most likely! That one is in bad shape. I wonder what it sold for?

 

Just read he studied with Sorolla in Spain. You know... That signature doesn't appear to be in an old hand -- and Washburn was born in 1866. You might want find some genuine signatures to compare it to. A quick internet search brought up these.

Please ignore the examples above. There was a C.C. Washburn; different individual. But I do believe the hand on your print would be unusual for someone born in 1866.

The signature looks good to me. He has a distinctive tail on the W. Here is another by Cadwallader Lincoln Washburn circa 1920 (https://www.annexgalleries.com/inventory/detail/18899/cadwallader).

After some further research I believe the Worthpoint listing is way off on the age of that one. Washburn learned drypoint etching in France in 1904. Was in California in 1908, and again in 1915 where he exhibited 50 artworks at the pan Pacific international exhibition. I can't find a link to the Gallery and the exhibit. Would be nice if this was one of the 50.

Excellent find and in very nice condition. Just the kind of thing I am always on the hunt for. You used to be able to find etchings like this fairly easily in shops and thrift stores 15-20 years ago, now they mostly go directly to the auction market. I have attached the dictionary entry from my artists in California book.
