Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The photographer was George M. Elton of Palmyra, New York. He was apparently well known in his day, as I've found a lot of mentions of him online. This image is listed (not shown) on page 9 of this pdf document:
    https://graphicarts.princeton.edu/w...16/06/philadelphia-photographer-by-date-1.pdf

Here is what page 9 says about it.
Negative by George M. Elton (Palmyra, New York, 1848-1927), printed by Charles T. Fellows. “Me Next. A Chip of the Old Block [composit from two negatives].” Silver print. The Philadelphia Photographer 28, no.407 (December1891). Commentary on p.718.

The typed document linked above has the title
Index to frontispiece embellishments from 1864 to 1901 in The Philadelphia Photographer (later Wilson’s Photographic Magazine). Chronological by issue.

Issues of The Philadelphia Photographer are probably digitized in Internet Archive, Google Books, and/or HathiTrust. Or somewhere else. If you are interested, the frontispiece should be findable online.

I didn't find any publication history of reproductions of your image. It is clever, and I assume it was reproduced at least several times. Also, if The Philadelphia Photographer was published in a very large format, it would be possible that this is the frontispiece mentioned in the index. But somebody would need to check into the history of that publication.

According to the internet, he was considered a leading "genre" photographer so I'd assume his work was widely known in its time.
