    Hi Guys,

I got this from my local auction in a box of odds and sods and it has me baffled as to what it is, origin, age etc. I have searched all the descriptions I can think of on the internet and not found anything like it. It has the body of a frog but the head, ears and front paws of a dog.

So for all I know it could be a ming thing or more likely a pound shop thing. It measure 6½ high and seems to be glazed stoneware.

Any info would be great thanks. 20180506_113913.jpg 20180506_113919.jpg 20180506_113932.jpg 20180506_113944.jpg

Maybe a frog prince who has been kissed by a dog?
It is in a delft-ish style.

Now there's any idea for a new Disney film haha.....yes I suppose it does have a delft-ish look to it as well as a daft-ish look

Tin glazed earthenware I believe. If no one comes up with ideas I'll haul out some books (I've got a busy day and can't look at the moment:().

It looks kind of like a frog form that someone painted more dog like.

Yes i can see that now you have said, it is almost like someone has decided to make a hybrid animal using a frog base design, really weird i think it is.

Any info that you might be able to glean from your books would be great but obviously I don't want to take any of your time up...thanks for your reply.

I think it may be the seldom seen dog eared alligator. I know it looks hungry but please don't feed it.

Hi, no nothing on the bottom apart from what you can see in the photo. As you say, there isn't any webbing on the front feet, as though it has be made as a dog frog....mysterious indeed.

Dog eared alligator, this thing is turning into a new found mythical beast !!! :wacky:

I did try and feed it some of my wifes infamous "Heavy cake", the next morning the cake was on the table next to the frog dog....i'm not saying it sicked it back up but I have seen the same reaction from our kids with the cake ;)

Just wanted to let you know that I looked through the books I thought might be the most help but...they weren't (any help that is). Sorry.

The best I can say is that it appears to be tin-glazed earthenware to me and for some reason I keep wanting it to be French. No idea why.

Well thank you for your time and effort for looking, it is very appreciated.

So it is still a mystery to the origin of this. The closest I have got to finding out what it is was yesterday when I showed a guy in an antiques shop a photo of it on my phone, he said that he was sure he had seen one like it before but he could not remember the details of it....as for it being French, it may well be. I always listen to the voices in my head as well but that's another story ;):D.... Cheers - Sy

Certainly looks delftware from the painting. Now that is well weird. Maybe a 19th century Potter Planned a 100 year old prank on you. “Right Hans, I’m gonna stick a dogs head on a frog...”

Ha Ha, i'm loving that idea of a 100 year old prank.... Delftware does seem to be the general opinion of everyone but could the prank plot thicken here....perhaps a Staffordshire potter did it in Delftware style...Oh the twists and turns of all this :(;)

Agree although I’m pottery-challenged. It is a kitchen-match holder made in late 20th/early 21st. C. as a decorative novelty for mass-production. Likely made in China. Match-holding was goal of the “designer” who didn’t consult any zoologists along the way.

I'm not liking your answer for 2 reasons, 1, im still smiling at the fact it might of been a 19th century prank......and 2, I think you may be right haha. Even though I can't find one like it on google images, it would work as a kitchen match holder ans so far it is the most reasonable answer, thanks :)

I was going to guess an insect trap for the garden or patio. Put some soapy sugar inside and watch the insects fly into the mouth never to emerge. I will defer to the match holder suggestion, however.:)

Seems like most of the bigmouth frogs advertised now are supposed to be sponge holders.
