Looks like a semi copy of a French coin but that would say 'R F' not GF.

It does appear quirkily naive, possibly in the Japanese fashion of the late 19th C but I'm no expert, could also be 18th C Chinoiserie.

I found several GF from Desvres but no chicken

Would 'MADE IN FRANCE' necessarily make it 20th century?

Hey! I've been plunking around all winter trying to ID a mulberry-purple tile with a badly impressed rooster mark. When I finally figured out the word Desvres, Google brought me here. Good grief, I should have posted here in the first place, LOL!
After much Googling, all the words around the rooster read: Marque de Fabrique, Desvres, C F .

Terry, does yours actually say 'Made in France' on the back? Mine has the word France handwritten in black, but I didn't believe it. I was sure someone had done it with a Sharpie marker at a later date. I was stuck on the idea it was a Delft Holland tile. I guess I can be confident it was marked 'France' at the time of manufacture now.

Charles Fourmaintraux took charge of the pottery factory in 1900, so that would be the date the rooster mark was first used...?

He doesn't look too distressed about it though. Just a little ho-hum.

    Hi,
Looks like a take off on the "Good Samaritian". The "flames" are plants. It is a wonderful tile.

When I was searching Delft tiles, some how I ended up looking at pages with the 1559 painting of the Netherlandish Proverbs by Pieter Bruegel.

One of the proverbs depicted is "If you eat fire you will crap sparks."
So that's how I got the idea of butt on fire.:wacky:

I wonder if that's one of those strange literal translations that doesn't quite work or if that's what they really mean. It's pretty hysterical.
