My wife bought this bashed piece at a French brocante.

My questions are: Is the mark belonging to one of the Fourmentaux Brothers, who, I believe had their workshop in Desvres - if it is then which brother is it. Hopefully the answer will reveal roughly how old it is.

The second question is: Apart from it being a place name, what is the significance of Auvergne on this little pot?

And thirdly: can anyone describe the marks?

AND ... What would this have been used for? Sugar ... confiture?

Height just under 4"/9cm diameter (excluding handles) about 3"/8cm

It does look like a sugar to me. As to the maker, the mark isn't that easy to decipher.

This link has quite a few examples of Fourmaintraux marks. (There used to be a really good site for their marks but it's no longer available using their links:sour:.)

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I notice there were also pottery makers in Auvergne, and some of their products were painted in a similar style to your pot. Just one possibility for research.
