... with actor Franklin Pangborn. Spanky and the gang ruin his day in a 1929 Little Rascals Short, "Wild Poses". Painted on the studio window is the only mention of photographer's name. :snaphappy: Nice work for a 3 second gag. :artist:

That's a beautiful example of antique sign art-great find Roaring ! There's a sign artist on Etsy who does this quality of work. He's located in England and I'm sure he's seen his share of antique pub signage.
I wrote him complimenting his skills.

I've read that getting that feathered effect is the result of painting the glass with a particular glue. As the glue dries, it shrinks, but it holds to the glass strongly enough that the glass splinters rather than the glue letting go. The glue is painted on, and the degree and patterning of the feathering can be controlled to some extent through the brushwork in laying down the glue, both in terms of direction and thickness of the coat.

The artistry in movies always astonishes me: the way incredible pieces can be produced for sets, only to be destroyed later in the film. It's like throw-away art.

Oppositely, I once saw a large movie prop painting for sale. Up close it was like a preliminary portrait painting. Stand a few feet away and it became a fine work.

Rabbit Skin glue. The effect can be accelerated by freezing the glass panel immediately after spreading the surface with glue.
I have some of the granules in vintage containers. I'll post pics of them here soon.
