Spotted this folk carved wall pocket. Got these great photos.
It looks early Pennsylvania to me, but I couldn't find much similar to this.
    Any thoughts?

Maybe a letter box? Hard to tell what exactly it is from your pictures.

Not a wall pocket, aren't those vases?

I took the liberty of editing your pic of the box in hopes of seeing the design better to possibly ID it origin like Pennsylvania Dutch. I thought PA Dutch at first with a 6 petal hex sign in the middle, but on seeing the other designs better, I'm not so sure?? This doesn't look like a candle box to me. Wall boxes for candles had a more box like bottom shape and weren't slanted like this one is. Examples:

Wonder if this might be called a "chip carved" wall holder with geometric designs?? The following page has German/Dutch folk art chip carved spoon racks. One of the racks says the following about chip carving: "Chip carving has been long popular in the northern Dutch province of Friesland but the art form gained followers throughout the Netherlands."

Thank you Susan. I wish it was an early chipcarved piece. It's lightly carved with applied pieces and later than the important spoon racks, yet too old for the more common recent ones. I'm certain it's from that tradition. Hoping someone who knows this kind of work can speak to the date and use of this one.

Nice item that I think is probably for newspapers/letters ... kind of a place to stash the daily deliveries for perusal later. Could be Pennsylvania Dutch or from other American ethnic community. It is just as likely European in origin. It does not seem to be as deeply carved as the chip-carved pieces from Holland. I also see little similarity to the last piece posted from ebay.
