I'd like to have some opinions on another piece that's up for auction. This is advertised as a Heppelwhite chest of drawers with writing on the back that says "1810". It looks more like it says 1840 or 1890 to me. It has obviously been refinished (seemingly well). Does everything look original save the refinishing? 20200713_071525.jpg 20200713_071543.jpg 20200713_071610.jpg 20200713_071627.jpg 20200713_071700.jpg 20200713_071723.jpg 20200713_071753.jpg 20200713_072017.jpg

It's a Hepplewhite style (federal period 1790-1830) chest but it is probably not period, the top 2 drawers have had the brass pulls replaced at a minimum & top looks repaired/replaced.
It's 19th century and antique but given condition issues, unless very cheap, I'd pass.

Now that I look again, it's weird, that "string inlay" at top of chest which is a common feature on this style, it doesn't have it on the drawers and, it should!
Revises the previous post to very very cheap.:eek::p

I kinda like cock-beaded drawers myself! :bag:

Agrees, that's another issue, on period chests in this style, cock beaded drawers are the norm, not lipped as these are.

Thank you so much! The two things you mentioned (the top and the pulls) were my concerns/what I was having doubts about. I appreciate your time.

I can't say I've ever seen a monogrammed chest of drawers before! Anyone else?
I also wouldn't put much significance into the scribbled pencil markings on the back of chest pieces. They are usually some sort of internal inventory system for the woodworker's or retailer's shop.

Yes, if you were in desperate need of a dresser and this was $100 or less, might make sense, otherwise, I'd pass this one by.

Me either plus it's hideously out of proportion to the rest of chest, something odd happened here.

Must have been customized in the late 19th century for "MW."

I don't doubt it, very possible but, MW remodeling kinda screwed the pooch for everyone but him/her! :hilarious:

Yes, looks like it but kinda destroyed the value of the dresser in that process. I doubt it started out this way originally, somewhere along the way MW decided to "personalize" this piece.
