Just picked up this pair of cuties. I'll clean out all the encrusted brasso residue, but the question is should I replace the missing 'jewels'. I'm pretty sure the eyes would have had gems too and many are missing in the body. Thoughts?

I think they are impressive as they are. Surely some antiques should be allowed to display the wounds of their longevity.

    I'd leave them alone too.

    Hi,
I would be sure to scrub off all the polish to see what they really look like. They may look fine without the "jewels".

Just to round this off. I cleaned off all the polish and washed them and some quick phone snaps are below. The 'jewels' are actually thin slices of glass with a thin sheet metal backing (much thicker than foil) then fixed into the holes with plaster of paris rather than glue. As such I don't think it would be possible to make it look right by putting modern gems in the empty slots, and as they look ok I'm going to leave them as is.

They look good the way they are. I bet @kyratango would know how to make suitable faux replacement stones. I'm thinking aluminum foil and enamels.

Thanks for thinking of me  The tinfoil and enamel method could work, but... too rudimentary for these amazing pieces:woot:
I'd leave them as is, now they are beautifully cleaned!
