Fenton Milady Mystery

Did Fenton make Milady in milk glass, either for themselves or for sale by someone else? I can only find vases in carnival versions, and one experimental green version. Also, the vases I have found all have 6-pointed crimped / ruffled rims.

I've looked in the Whitmyer 1907-1939 book (only covers carnival), the Walk 1940-1970 book (none listed), and the Warman/Moran ID & Price Guide (shows the "kitchen green" version, and a couple of QVC overlay colors). And, of course, the usual websites like DDoty, FentonFanatics, Carnival Heaven. The National Fenton Glass Society page also shows several of the vases in their newsletter archives, but none matching mine.

It is 10.75" high, 5.75" diameter at the rim, 5.5" diameter at the base.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Hi UncleChuckTX - I checked a couple of more books for you. Walk's Big Book of Fenton Milk Glass did not show anything in the Milady pattern. Fenton did make this pattern for Singleton Bailey. Singleton Bailey isn't mentioned in Domitz's Fenton Glass Made for Other Companies but is profiled in Volume II. Volume II wasn't really any help though - it only shows the standard vase in cobalt blue iridized. As far as I can tell Fenton didn't make anything in milk glass for Singleton Bailey.

To me that would suggest two possibilities - it may have been a limited production or prototype item sold only through the gift shop. A less likely possibility is that Fenton acquired someone else's mold and you have a product of whatever that original company was. Somehow it doesn't strike me as old milk glass though. And this is all conjecture of course. Regardless it's a lovely vase and I usually am not fond of milk glass. I think the milk glass suits the form much better than later iridized colors.

I received clarification on this on the eBay board - thought I'd copy it here, FYI.

Info from the Whitmyer 1907-1935 book (that I overlooked several times before starting this thread :shame: ): Fenton Milady vase, #1110 flared rim, 1930s.

    Reading is hard.

Hi UncleChuckTX - thanks for reporting back. It wasn't a pattern I was familiar with so I know to keep on the lookout for it.

Don, this is what they usually look like, and why I was so confused about the non-carnival version and the different rim:

    Original carnival: http://www.ddoty.com/milady.html
    Reissues (contemporary carnival): http://www.ddoty.com/newmilady.html
Reissues (overlay colors for QVC) - halfway down the page: http://www.fentonglasssociety.org/NFGS_Auction_2014_pg_2.php

This is the other opaque version - the experimental "kitchen green" from the 1930s - at bottom of the page: http://www.fentonglasssociety.org/Flyer_Fotos_May_Jun_13.php

And I finally found another milk glass version with the crimped rim: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/fenton-art-glass-milk-glass-milady-51919258

Thanks for the links - it's amazing the changes some of Fenton's molds went through regarding treatments and colors. All in all I still prefer your version. My own personal opinion is Fenton colors and decorations went way overboard as time went on. Too many of the colors and decorations got gaudy and by the time Fenton closed you almost couldn't see the shape of the pieces for all the decoration. But, of course, I like old things so maybe I'm just being a fuddy-duddy!
