Thanks for posting those SOS. That first ones I don't think I would have guessed they were plastic!

I have found that a lot of the fake sterling is just too shiny. I bought this necklace marked sterling, and I had a feeling it was going to be fake, but I figured for $3 it was worth a try. Fake, fake, fake - not a gram of silver in it. :p

I would have been fooled by that box chain - I would have thought that was real.

Here's a picture of the front. It's the seller's picture, not the best, but it will give you an idea....

Yes the box chain is quick to take a magnet ;)

Your stones look like a replica of blue lace agate. Are they glass? Plastic? Still a pretty piece :)

Here is a blue lace agate in the rough. Yours sure look like the real deal. phpNrWRqAPM.jpg

That's interesting - they sure do look like that. I didn't give much thought to the stones after I tested the silver. They're not plastic, but I didn't give them a close look.

You were right Shiloh. I just looked on ebay, and sure enough there is a lot of sterling silver blue lace agate necklaces that look like mine coming out of India. Probably where my seller got it. It was the only one he had, so I assume he bought it and wasn't happy with it or figured out it wasn't sterling.

Some of them have $15 and $20 bids. Grr, that makes me mad because those buyers probably have no idea that they're not getting real silver. I had an inkling that mine wasn't really silver, but for $3 I figured it was worth it to buy it.

A lot of the items from India do have real stones in them. For ten agate cabs (and 18 iffy amethysts) $3.00 isn't bad. When I can get that price I buy some to take the stones out of & make something else. Some of the dealers are learning that they can sell things like this for what they are to crafters for the same price they have to con someone else for. Even drill a few holes through them and double the price! :jawdrop:

The first photo above has some nice art glass cabs. I don't think they were made to fool anyone; the stuff with the "gold" in it (actually copper) was made in Italy and very popular. I have some of it around myself. The fake silver is another matter.

I doubt your blue lace is glass, I could be wrong but its a very common gem.Its mined in So. Africa and is a member of the chaledony family. I have seen this stone, and tiger eye and other common gem stones in jewelry that is not sterling or gold. I like elarnia's idea ;)

Some lower grade jade, tiger's eye etc were common in costume jewelry back in the 70s and even later. In the 80s they made costume necklaces out of what I call "random pretty rock" - mostly agates. The findings were never anything but silver or gold tone.
