Hi, not sure if this is the right section for this topic. If not, sorry, I'm new here. :)

Anyway, I saw something interesting as I was walking out of Goodwill today - an alleged Fabergé egg for $500. Now I'm not under any delusions that this is an original Fabergé egg, but I suppose it might be possible that it's one of the recent Victor Mayer ones. If so, how can I identify it as such, and would it be worth buying at that price?

This thing was quite large (about the size of an American football I suppose) and the design wasn't very complex - it was a pretty basic looking checkered translucent Ruby & glass(or diamond/crystal/or some such) shell with a small silver stand, and there didn't seem to be anything inside of it.

If they only wanted $50 for it I would buy it without hesitation, but $500 would be quite an investment for me. I don't want to put that kind of cash into it only to find that it's a $20 eBay fake.

To be honest the only reason I even know what a Fabergé egg is is because I watched Serial Mom back in high school LOL, so I'm completely out of my element here and any information would be appreciated. I plan to go back tomorrow to get a hands-on look at it.

    Hi and welcome!

I don't know a thing about Fabergé but without some photos I don't think most people will be able to offer opinions. (Well opinions maybe but not informed ones).

I did look on liveauctioneers to see what various auctions houses have been selling as glass Fabergé eggs and there are quite a lot that have been sold using the Fabergé name. I will say that most sold for well under $500 so that's about all I can offer.

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that the 'real' Faberge eggs were mostly identified and if you had one, it would be in a catalogue.

I went to a museum Fabergé show a couple of years ago and OH MY!

As I understand it yes, the original eggs, which are quite complex, are known. I think a few went missing after the revolution.

The real ones are enamel, gold and encrusted with gems, each opens and contains "little gifts". They have mechanisms to lift the gifts up when the egg is opened. I would seriously doubt Good Will has a real one, and if they did, it wouldn't be going for $500.

At the museum they had in the shop for sale eggs of all sizes. I bet that is what Good Will has :)

Lickety said she/he knows it's not an original Faberge...

wouldn't know where to start without photographs - Lickety, you might do a google search describing the one you saw? and at least you'll find something you can compare it to and information on manufacturers.

    Is it all glass?

Hi LicketySplit and Judy, and a warm WELCOME!!!! From what I gather, it takes a LOT of practice to determine if an egg is a real Faberge or not!! And NO, I don't own one!!!! What my Mom handed down to me has never been verified one way or the other, but she did NOT pay any fabulous price for it.....trust me, so I'm of the ilk...NOT....sadly....and it's not an egg, it's a small animal, and the finesse or quality I don't believe is there either. However I can love it just the same!:happy::happy::happy::happy::smug::smug: Wish I could be of more help for you.....and like all have said before....clear pictures are a MUST!!!!!

Thanks for all of the replies everyone!

I went back to Goodwill today and after seeing it up close I feel kind of silly even making this topic - it appears that it's probably just a cheap gift shop item. Appears to be all glass and the design is nowhere near as intricate as even the fake Fabergé eggs you can buy on eBay for cheap. So it's probably not a very interesting find, but then what do I know?

Took a few pictures of it as requested, here they are:

This looks like a pressed glass candy jar with possibly a ruby flashed design.

I suck at pressed glass patterns, but there are a few folks here who will likely know it without even having to consult their books. :p

Please know this is far from the silliest thread I have ever seen on a forum. ;)

Besides that is how you learn. You see something & you come here for help. Then before you know it you are able to spot treasures all on your own.:kiss::kiss:
