I went to an estate sale the other day and found a beautiful cocktail ring, 14k gold and smokey topaz. I was told it was circa 1960's but the leaf design on the band makes me think it may be older. Possibly art nouveau?

I also found this antique looking crucifix pendant on a stone necklace of possibly carnelian stones and other stones I'm not sure of. There was no one at the estate sale who could tell me anything about this necklace. I paid $20 for it. There is a light stamp on the back bottom of the cross 'Germany'. I have been searching online for hours trying to find something but I turned up nothing. The metal appears to be iron possibly? There are also 4 metal 'charms'. If anyone could tell me anything about it I would appreciate it! I've attached photos!

I'd think 1960s was spot on for the cocktail ring. Reason being the brushed leaves. Could/would you post in focus close-up photographs of the rosary charms?

Hi, your ring is not Art Nouveau and the date they gave you seems reasonable.

The necklace with the crucifix looks newer also, WAG 1960s-80s. What kind of string is used on it? I am wondering if it's a necklace that someone restrung adding the charms and crucifix.

I think it's not a necklace, but a Catholic rosary.

I wonder if it's a home made one, it doesn't look like the ones I am used to seeing.

It does look like a marriage. An older crucifix with newer beads and findings. Hard to tell from photographs. It would be helpful if you posted the item against a solid background.

Thank you so much for your replies! Here are some more photos of the crucifix. It does look older than the beads it was strung on. The thread appears to be some kind of waxed nylon. The four metal 'charms' also appear older.

    Look into milagros (miracle) charms.

Smoky 'topaz' is actually smoky quartz. I would put the ring to the 70s.

Many of the red beads look like coral.

Same here. The rosary is a homebrew for sure, made from found bits and pieces that date from the 1950s to the 1980s. The stones are agates, glass and who-knows. Beyond that I haven't a clue. The ring.... early 70s?

Can you tell whether the crucifix is inlaid with ivory, bone or something man made?

It appears like ivory or bone or something porous.. it's not completely smooth to the touch but slightly rough

If you can detect some roughness with a fingertip, I'd be inclined toward bone. Polished ivory feels rough to the teeth, the way pearls do, but smooth to the fingers. We would need a tight, in focus, closeup of the material to have any degree of certainty. Also, you can try it against your teeth & see what you feel. Plastic will be very slick.

I'm thinking straight plastic. I've seen a lot of similar crosses and they're always plastic. It's also got knobs on the back that are pushed through the metal, indicators of a molded material if ever I saw them.

Think those are the points at which the body & sign above are held on to the cross. The 'ivory' may be plastic, but I don't think the knobs necessarily indicate that. Looks like a strongly made piece.

I'd like a closer look at this area at the bottom of the cross:

    I don't think it's a rosary, it doesn't count properly.
