Once again struggling with my british hallmarks. Please confirm 1878 London sterling interpretation. These look like ivory handles. Also, not finding Rh makers mark with lower case h.

These new ivory rules can be so intimidating though. Not sure I can ever sell it, johnny. It is clearly 100 years old but how do I prove that it was legally imported?

I was surprised to see the mark on the side, in a spot that would attract so much attention

I just wanted a little help with british mark! The "c" indicates 1878. I thought the panther is the london assay office mark and rh is robert hutton from william hutton and sons. What is shang/shangas?

So, paying $22/ounce for approximately 60 ounces wasn't out of line? Sometimes, I cannot resist the urge to go over my initial limit ($1000, in this case)!

I think you scored a wonderful set.....& I don't think the price was outrageous .

    If the C is 1878.....then the D would be 1879......right ?

With two more dumbs posts, I am surprised that Josh and the powers to be haven't banned me from further participation!!

    1. Sorry, I missed Shangas earlier post. Just overlooked it.
    2. Yes, "D" would be 1879. In researching comparables pieces, I stumbled on a comp with the 1878 mark of "c" and somehow became fixated in this.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Yes that C in shield (with the London city mark - Uncrowned leopard - and Sovereign Head for Queen Victoria) does make this 1878. See that date table for London in this link

    http://www.925-1000.com/dlc_london.html

The RH was registered by Robert Hutton of William Hutton and Sons in 1875, with registration until 1889 - as shown in the page cxgirl posted in #2 above. No problem there - timeframe matches.

As for finding it odd to have the full marks set in such a visible place - British owners of such things really liked having the marks out there for all their guests to see. Showed their wealth!

Finding additional/repeated marks (like the RH by itself on the underside) is not a big deal either. Sometimes extra marks are evidence of what AF and OBB refer to as "clobbering." Meaning that an older piece was reworked at a later date, but I doubt that is the case here.

    Very nice piece.
