hi all my late father kept these curious little electro plated bowls in our garage and I would love to find out more.

    The date stamp is W = 1933

    Any ideas ?

    Thanks

There seems to be something that was eradicated - below (something "hard soldered" and the "R R") - that makes me think these were made for a railroad. That falls in the same category as "hotel ware." Very tiny it would appear, although actual measurements would help, but I haven't a clue what something this small would be used for in a dining car setting.

    Thanks for the reply.

The eradicated part says j. Lyons Co. on one of them that hasn’t been totally eradicated.

Size wise they are about 7cm wife by 5cm high.

    They are U.K. items.

I think they are silver plated

You're right about them being UK and plated. Have you done any searching on the Lyons Co?

Yes it was a company that had tea shops and restaurants some of which were high class. Lyons brand was massive in the U.K. for food manufacture but they began as a chain of tea houses and restaurants

Could these be sugar bowls ? Caviar bowls or similar ?

I could make a few uneducated guesses about what a Lyons location might use these for, but I'm in the US, so I think a UK member might be a better "guesser."

(Personally, these don't look appropriate for a "high end" location - and certainly not for caviar.)

    Possibly but all metal ?
No lid either makes me wonder

The two flat handles make the overall shape resemble a porridger - but I think with the dimensions given, they are too small for that.

Agreed - too small for porridge

    Does an egg fit?
    Soft boiled eggs?

    Salts, missing the liner?
    Nut cups.
    Mint cups.

Too big for an egg unless it’s an ostrich egg.

Gawd, I can tell you lot ain't Brits. Those are tea strainer holders or rests.

I am enchanted by them being for Lyons Corner Houses and rather covet one. I vaguely remember going to one in the West End, complete with nippy.

This sort of thing was known as hotel plate, here. Heavy duty silver plate.

( I missed the tag on this, so a bit late.)

A fair number of tags have been reported missing recently. But we're glad you found the thread now!

    There you go. ;)

The strainers had matching a matching tag if that makes sense: same shape as the ones on the holder.

Elkington items are worth money. They are the first company to get a patent for a silver plating process. Their items are associated with a UK Rail Line among other things.

Not worth much here, sadly, far too common. :(
