Hello everyone! I'm trying to figure out how old this set is. The website silvercollection has a lot of Elkington marks but none that quite match mine. I thought maybe researching Brown & Polson's might help but met another dead end. The set was meant for six spoons but I guess two disappeared over the years. Each teaspoon is about 5 1/8" long. There is an X mark, then the word ELKINGTON in three sections, the letter V, and then E & CO crown mark. The E & OC is on two lines. Any help regarding age and how common this set is would be appreciated. Thanks!
    Don

Hi Don. :) Elkington marks - particularly the date marks - can be confusing because there are so many exceptions and differences over the many years they used them. But any important factor is the shape of the punch in which the date mark is placed. Your picture of the marks isn't close enough to distinguish the shapes in which the V and X are displayed or whether the 2 letters seem to be capitals or lower case. Any chance of a closer one? And while you're at it, a better lit picture of the handle design?

Hi Bakersgma - thanks for responding. I tried to get a better picture of the marks but my phone isn't real good at close-ups. I did get a better shot of the spoon design though. Looks like art nouveau - maybe a thistle or holly? The X looks like a capital. It is in a circle with a little tail on the left bottom edge of the circle. I'm less sure about the V. I believe it is another capital. It is in a hexagon. Thanks for your assistance.

Advertising premium set from the 1930s, I think. Send in a bunch of coupons from the labels on custard powder tins or whatever else they produced and get a free teaspoon set.
Could even be post-war, I remember similar offers in the 50s. The amount you'd need to spend on the product was quite substantial and I don't know if they were that cynically cunning at the time but I suspect the offer would expire before the average user had the requisite number of coupons

Well, after much searching and comparing and an exhaustive reading of information about Elkington's marks, I have settled on 1907 - the V would be in a very slightly broadened (or squashed) square (such that the 2 vertical sides bow out, making it look to you like a hexagon.)

But first I need to ask one question - Are you absolutely certain that the shield with E & Co inside has a crown above the letters? I ask for 2 reasons - first, the crown was removed, by action of law, in 1898. The crown being one of the City Marks the UK uses for sterling (Sheffield), it was decreed that no crown could be used in marks on silverplate.

Second reason - here is the best picture I could find of an Elkington mark in which the name was enclosed in 3 conjoined "links" containing the 3 groups of letters. As you will see in the image, the shield contains no crown.

By the 30's (if this were as AF describes above) they were using a different marks for Elkington itself - and neither X nor V fall into the mix again until the mid-50's.

My bad - What I thought was a crown was a shield. The shield and contents look exactly like your example. Thank you for going to all that work.

    Hi dgbjwc
I came across your article. I have a complete set of the picture you placed above and i will look it out and post it. I also own the set that SBSVC showed in their reply. I think i may also have another complimentary set from Brown & Polsons as well. I collect a lot of different advertising memorabilia by this company as they stared out in my old home town of Paisley.

Thank you, munsterlander, and welcome to the board! If you need any extra spoons for your set please let me know. Since this is only a partial set I haven't decided whether to try and sell it or not.

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

Pardon me, but I don't understand.
If you collect these specific items, for their advertising ...would not a near complete set...with original box ....be something to snap up...and wait for two lone spoons from a broken up set to show up in the future..?
