My first thought is fake/reproduction (but I might well be wrong) Other more knowledgeable members will know better.

I’d say repro, albeit made in Egypt.

I used to go digging in old Victorian rubbish dumps and I found one of these, does anyone know when they started to be faked?

My one was dug from a Victorian rubbish dump in undisturbed strata from at least 1890's, how much older it is I don't know. It is carved stone and has 2 holes going through the middle from front to back, it's 1.5" long by 3/4" wide

Not fakes, but rather copies. Made since at least the eighteenth century.

Thank you, do you know where they were copied? My one is made of carved stone, it would seem to be easier to make it from fired clay to copy?

as far as i can observe yours seems to be made of glass not stone, so itś a european scarab. it has been cast you can see that when you look at rim with the small bumbs.

My one has striations as you would find in sedimentary rock so I don't think it's glass but it is hard as glass

The truth is I know nothing about artifacts, my field is the last 400 years, manly art boxes. The reason I don't venture far from that field is someone could make one of these last week and I wouldn't know the difference lol

I could be, it's not transparent in any way but it could be a dirty sort of milk glass?

thatś wright slag glass is mostly not transparent because it is waste glas from metal processing. so no ordinary glass

Yeah I think you have nailed it, I can see many of these set in broaches, I think that's where mine came from. Thank you, mystery solved :)
