Hi all I'm trying to figure out this little individual hot water pot.
I'm finding that Eales 1779 is a Leonard silver plate items from the 1980's This piece seems older though.
It's 6" tall. chased and most of the plating is worn off.

Hmm. Why would Leonard, a US company, mark anything EPNS, which you don't normally see here?

Rainwater does not list the "Eales 1779" tradename and her section on Leonard does not mention it either. She does say (and this is in the revised 5th edition - 2004 and the last) that Leonard was having some items made by 7 firms in India (which could be the source of an EPNS mark, I guess.)

Others who mention "Eales 1779" on Google seem to say that the Leonard ones are also marked "silver plate" and Leonard, in addition to Eales. Which yours doesn't have.

Replacements has a section of inventory for "Eales of Sheffield" in which they include a line called "1779" (with no mention of Leonard.)

I'm just as confused as you are, Mikey.

Thanks Susan, It just looks much older than something that was made in the 80's
I did see one on the bay same but had The India on it.

Expired in 1987 and not revivable. Hmmmm.

Well, here's an interesting side note. Just for grins, I checked my book on pewter manufacturers of Sheffield, England, just in case the Eales of Sheffield name came from an older firm (many of the Sheffield pewterers also added silverplating to their line of wares.) And sure enough, the Eales name is mentioned - but only as a tradename on some of the wares of the Pewter Manufacturing Company (PMC.) PMC was established in 1968. A quote from the details - "Goods are exported worldwide under a variety of trademarks including KENT, LEONARD and EALES. Goods are also made for numerous other firms whose names are placed on the goods." The book was copyrighted in 1980.

My bottom line on this is that Mikey's hot water pot is not early but was made in Sheffield by PMC with the older style of decor.

We already know that the plating is mostly gone and with it much of its appeal and value. I'm sorry I can't justify it being older. :(

I guess somebody really loved it shiny. I sometimes forget how really long ago we're talking. If you polish something several times a year for 40 years (or so) that's a lot of wear to the plating. Especially if you use a harsh polish:(

True, SIS. Plus there is still polish residue on it.

Thank you Susan and SIS for going to all the trouble to find out for me. I only paid 2.00 for it so not a big deal. But it's cute and may double my money anyway lol.
