Today I bought this pretty candlestick! (8€ it was cheap af!). He had no idea what he was selling. (Neoiher did I tbh, it just looked different and intriguing).

Made of brass and a steel rod holding it together. Haven't had the chance to clean it yet.

Just found similar ones on google, supposedly 17th C. Flemish/Dutch?

Nice, Matt. Don't remember 17th century ones with a steel rod, but I haven't been near one for years.:joyful:
Just a question, is that a screw in the base? If so, it is a 19th century copy. It has that general look too, imo. Still antique though.;)
Many of these and other cast brass pieces were copied during the 19th century Historic Revival period. So not fakes, but fashionable replicas or 'made in the style of'.

Well, there is a steel rod from the spike all through the whole thing. You screw the rod to a nut, the base itself has only a hole

    Yes, 19th century.
I live in the southern Netherlands, btw, close to both the Belgian and the German borders. I have inherited a couple of Low Countries 19th century Historic Revival pieces myself.:)

How is the 'original' constructed? So I know should I ever find one of these again

I would have said even into the 20th century. Besides construction method, look at the feet.

It is possible that it is the early years of the 20th.

Jeff is dead-on. My reaction also when I saw the hurried treatment of the foot.
