I am not knowledgeable about Delft but presume this dish, which is about 14 inches in diameter, is Dutch. As you can see, it's in poor condition with cracks and fritting which reduces it's value considerably. However, is it 18th C. and what do you reckon it's worth paying in your part of the world? Thanks for your help.

Well in my neck of the woods - Georgia - Delft is a hard sell and with damage that has not been professionally repaired, forget it. Sad because old Delft is beautiful. On eBay, there is an 18th c delft charger/plate that has professional repair (I think I saw old staples) and it is $175 or best offer.

Thanks for your reply, Laura. I think you are right, unless it's a more interesting piece, which this one isn't. Of course most old delft has some damage but this one is quite bad. It is in an auction lotted up with a load of rubbish so I'm hoping there won't be much interest.

It’s a nice plate but I think I would be lucky to sell it for more than £20 in that condition.I sold some perfect last year for under £50

Thanks John, it doesn’t surprise me that it would be hard to sell over there in such poor condition, and you’d know. Of course English delft fetches higher prices, particularly the very early pieces. We’ll throw in a low bid and see what happens. There’s such little knowledge or interest here in such pottery that most buyers would probably throw it away and keep the junk that’s lotted with it.

I always love ancient pieces like these and can’t resist buying them. I am always disappointed when they sell badly .

I suspect this would be very late 18th or early 19th century. The damage appears to be due to the failed attempt to make a hanging hole during production. Stress at that point has caused the crack to appear over time. The fact that it is 14" is good, far less common than 12" or less. The way the crack is formed is bad news as it may propagate further especially if it is exposed to regular heating and cooling (ie in full sun in a window). Rim chips and glaze losses and minor hairlines are usually acceptable but reduce value, this crack would make it a very hard sell. Unless you want it as a study piece I would pass on it.

Same here, there’s so little in the way of anything antique, even from the Victorian era, that we grab whatever’s going. I’m very fond of delft but there’s nothing here ☹️.

Thanks for your useful observations - if we buy it we’ll keep it and I’ll make some repairs. The good thing about delft is that it’s friable and easy to stabilise with wood glue and fill with plaster etc.
