Would anyone have any views on this dragon vase? The painting looks a bit crude in my view but there seem to be rust marks on the surface. Still, a modern copy maybe?
    Thank you,
    Tara

Search for ginger jar or temple jar, whatever that is, with foo dog finial. Vases don't have lids.

A little "overdone" on the rust spots, fairly recent copy IMO

Not really Tara, marks are rarely an indicator of anything when it comes to Chinese ceramics. Lots of good pieces are unmarked and lots of fakes are, so take your pick!

Thanks Blooey. I've a lot to learn. How does one know the age of a ceramic if there's no mark? Does one look at the characteristics of the piece etc? Thanks! Tara

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Why would a ceramic have rust spots? Is there metal involved in the making of this type of ceramic? I guess these questions are for @blooey or anybody else who wants to comment. And if this is a repro, why would it have these spots?

In Dutch we have the word 'dekselvaas', which means lidded vase, usually Delfts. They are based on Chinese ones of course.
