Hello! I have this vase and am trying to decipher the marks on the base. I am all new to this and trying to learn. This is the first Doulton piece I've ever bought. Please could someone help? I understand the marks could tell me how old this piece is and who the artist is. I'd be interested to know. Thanks very much! aa14db1f-6b45-4784-8670-a5aeb79d5858.jpg d90a653f-d51d-444f-bdec-4f723782f8d8.jpg

I missed the tag! No less than five decorator marks. I can’t make out the main hand scribed impressed one, that’s the one under the “inked” arrow looking one. I’ll have another squint. The other marks, the m, the block, the three lines and the inked one are assistants. I’ll fish the bible out.

The patent refers to the manufacturing technique, where real flowers were pressed into wet clay. This one is after 1891 and before 1906 from memory.

more tomorrow when I find the book.

All I know is that's a nice early one. Glad you bagged it and tagged it.

Hello @Vidya & welcome to the forum!!!:happy:

I am not usually drawn to pottery items but would have snagged that beauty even without turning it over to see the marks.:smuggrin:

You definitely hit a home run with your first Doulton purchase. :wideyed::woot::woot:

@Ownedbybear obviously got lost among the hoard & the books but I am sure she will be back eventually. ;):happy:

The X number is a pattern number for relatively mass market shapes.
