Featured Doulton Lambert Salt Glaze

Hi Folks, I would be grateful for any information on this Doulton Lambeth Salt Glaze container. It would be interesting to know what it was actually used for. I have researched the shape but have not been able to find a similar container. The back stamp is an oval without the date, which indicates it was produced between 1869 -1871, it also bears a BW impressed mark, which I assume are the artist initials but cannot attribute any known artist to them. The symbol was intriguing and I have managed to identify it as the merchant mark of: John Halle of Salisbury – Merchant of the Staple 1461. Has anyone any knowledge of why this symbol was used and its connection? The container is 9 ½” tall and the width including the spouts is 7 ½”.

 

For glugging down some lovely West Country rough mash cider aaarrr! Or ale, or water, or whatever you want to drink. It's kind of the English version of a kendi, not very common here as we tended to dispense before drinking rather than drinking directly from the vessel. I don't know if it's just a British thing but you'll get disapproving looks if you drink from a bottle over here (although a single serve beer bottle is generally socially acceptable these days!)

I've got that one. It's the Salisbury Kettle, aka the Old Sarum Kettle. Produced as promos for a Salisbury company, Watson & Co. They come with silver mounts as well.

I can't remember off hand which decorator marks those are, I'll go hunt the Bible out. Backstamp is late 19th.

My sincere thanks for all your replies, much appreciated. I get a lot of pleasure spending retirement time hunting down unusual items and then researching them. Several days ago I bought this interesting pot, with your help I now have an ‘Old Sarum Kettle! I’ve been on an interesting journey through both historical and social history and the kettle now has the recognition it deserves….as I often say ……they won’t make any more of these!
