Not seen one of these before.
In the UK they are usually made of pine, this is a hard wood with an leather upholstered top and two drawers at the bottom.
It has a woodwormed candle tray with actual candles in it.
Anyone date this or know where from ?

Not American for certain. I've never seen one with a leather top either. The hinges and latches truly old, but whether 120 years old or 200 I haven't a clue.

Looks like a regular blanket chest someone upholstered for god knows what reason . Those knobs look like replacements too. Painted white ? Well that explains the leather "cushion" ! The chest has a lovely patina.I just realized that the drawers have locks too . Hmmm, that is interesting.

Those often resided at the foot of a bed...to me, there's no mystery here: the upholstery was for comfort when used for sitting on the durn thing...what else?!

Yes most that I have had sat at the foot of the bed, and always pine, never had a leather upholstered one, nor with drawers.

Do those little 'bug' holes look active or not, inside?? Any little "dust piles".......

Aesthetically speaking,Id much rather see the top exposed, but not everyone has my exquisite sense of style . :)

I guess they liked the Swedish Gustavian look.:joyful: Very nice, but only if it is true Gustavian.

I think mid 19th century or so. Agree that the leather and knobs are not original to the piece.

All and all I don’t mind the leather cushion that much (but would have preferred it without) But the knobs are ugly as hell. Really like the rich colour of the wood

No sanding down and varnishing this one.

My antique dealer friend says it is British and early Victorian, drawers and knobs are original but the leather top has been added.
I will sell it as is.

Since it's leather and not vinyl I would too. Let the next guy deal with it.

Even similar but tiny little knobs (and darker!) would have been better....I see the key holes just above them.....
